Keep Your Firewood Dry and Clean Ready For Those Long Winter Nights
One of the things we looked for in a new home was a fireplace, as we had always loved the hypnotic heat of the flames. However, we did not think about where to get the firewood from, and where, or how to store the wood that we would need.
So, before we could have the lovely warm fire that we enjoy so much, we had to do some research. Sourcing the wood was not difficult, but storing it was another matter.
My husband is good with his hands and so we decided to get some firewood storage shed plans and build our own woodshed to keep our firewood dry and clean. We knew that if we managed to get a good store of wood to keep us going through the winter, but did not keep it dry, it would get too wet to burn, and most likely rot. This would be a total waste of effort and wood. It takes a bit of time and serious effort to stack the firewood so that the stack is secure but loose enough to air and keep dry.
The first thing my husband did was to take the plans to the local hardware store and get a quote for what we needed. He then went to a couple of lumberyards and purchased both the hardware and timber we needed for the best price. He was surprised to learn that there was a difference of at least 15% between the highest and lowest quotes, so this was well worth doing.
The shed has a slightly sloping roof and three walls. The floor consisted of plastic sheathing with cinder blocks on top. We stacked the wood so that it had enough spaces in between each piece to ensure that there was good airflow to keep the wood dry and stop any mould or rot.
The trick with having good wood to burn is getting it at the end of winter. It can then be stacked and stored through the summer months to fully dry and season up for use the following winter. This ensures that the firewood burns clean and easily, giving off maximum heat.
We can recommend that if you have to store firewood for your fireplace, and you want to keep your wood dry, that you get a firewood shed. If you plan to build one yourself to save yourself some money, get some good firewood storage shed plans.
Investing in a good set of plans will maximize the savings you can make when you build your shed, by minimizing material wastage and time. Good plans should have all the information you need set out in a clear and easy to understand format, and should contain a full list of materials required.
To make further savings, shop around and compare prices. There can be as much as 10-15% difference between stores and lumberyards, and well worth the little extra effort taken.
Once you have your firewood storage shed built and your wood in place, you will have the pleasure of having wood that burns well because it is clean and dry. We like nothing better than sitting by the fireplace watching the flames flicker and enjoying the wonderful warmth that only a fire can produce. It is quite romantic!
